the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven

The Mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven

“And the disciples came and said to Him, ‘Why do You speak to them in parables?’ “

Matthew 13:10 NKJV

People came from many towns and gathered to hear Jesus teach. As the disciples listened, they were puzzled that Jesus only spoke to the crowd in parables. Instead of teaching them a direct concept, He disguised it inside a story. When the disciples questioned Jesus about this, He explained that they alone were privileged to understand the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven. Everyone else could only listen to these mysteries through parables because “seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand” (Matthew 13:13b NKJV).

Furthermore, Jesus informed His disciples that this fulfilled the prophecy in Isaiah.

The Prophecy in Isaiah 6:10 Fulfilled

‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand,
And seeing you will see and not perceive;
For the hearts of this people have grown dull.
Their ears are hard of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed,
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.’

Isaiah 6:10 NKJV

Jesus also explained another curious concept. Those who are chosen to understand the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven will receive more, but those who don’t have understanding will lose everything.

Jesus concludes by telling His disciples that their eyes are blessed because they see, refering to their spiritual sight. Also, their ears are blessed because they hear the truth and receive it. He spells out how greatly blessed they are because many former prophets and righteous men would have given anything to be in their shoes. To hear and see these truths directly from the Master was an incredible blessing from God.

How do parables bless us today?

We have access not only to Jesus’s parables, but also to their meanings. Jesus makes us equal with His disciples in that our eyes can see and our ears can hear with the same spiritual understanding. Each parable has a nugget of truth and admonition wrapped up its story which leads us to a very sacred place. We are privileged to enter into understanding the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.
